Twentieth-century is distinguished as the time of urbanism as most of the people were fascinated towards the city life in Europe and America. This shift of a large number of people in the urban area inspired contemporary writers to use the urban environment in their literary works. These changes in society are very well explored in this course, the learner can get acquainted with this urban life in the contemporary era and its relative consequences in the lives of poor folklore who lost food and shelter due to the effect of Industrialization. In modernist writings the writer is more interested in individuals this individualism can be studied in this course at a length. One of the best examples is the 'A portrait of the artist as a young man' where the individual struggling with his identity as an artist is exhibited with the narrative technique of stream of consciousness. The wide-ranging themes like love, old age, politics art, aristocracy, violence and prophecy, history, myth, unity of being and country, intellectual hatred, innocence, anarchy, and nostalgia, a romantic longing to escape.
